Batmare: Mystery of the Mare Do Well

A present for Tara Strong.

I suppose the genesis of this piece came from a bizarre realization I had whilst searching the internet a few months ago. Despite Batman/MLP:FiM crossover fan art being pretty easy to find, I could not, for the life of me, find the one type of art that should be the most obvious to make: Twilight Sparkle dressed up as Batgirl from The New Batman Adventures (for those of you playing at home, Tara Strong voiced both Twilight and Barbara Gordon/Batgirl).

I decided that this void had to be filled.

So, I met Tara Strong at the Toy Art Gallery autograph signing a little later and informed her of this grave fan art deficiency. She suggested that I take a stab at it myself.

...And so I did! ^_^

I suppose I could have just called it a day after drawing Twilight, but I felt that wasn't quite enough this time. When looking for inspiration, I remembered the animated movie Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. I hadn't seen it, but the title had stuck in my head, and thus I decided on Batmare: Mystery of the Mare Do Well.

Figuring that I shouldn't just take inspiration without properly inspecting the source, I watched the movie before making this piece. Not only is it a pretty good movie, but in a surprisingly lucky twist... let's just say that casting Mare Do Well in the role of Batwoman turned out to be extremely appropriate. Tara herself is even in the movie, though sadly only for a small Barbara Gordon cameo.

UPDATE: On Saturday, February 23rd at Las Pegasus Unicon, I actually managed to deliver a framed print of this piece directly to Tara Strong! She loved it! Photo evidence here: [link] ^_^
